To Blog Or Not To Blog?

Alison Wedding

The Blog trend is really taking off online. Internet communities like
Yahoo and My Space are encouraging their members to house
personal content in a creative fashion.

Pat Maguire of Jazz Clubs Worldwide site has just launched the Blog
concept (web log) on his service @ www.jazz-clubs-worldwide.com .

Most of these services provide templates to enable the user to load
up text, pictures and sound to the net.

Although music professionals can construct their own personal web
site and journal their experiences within their own domain there
are some benefits of connecting with other Internet Communities.

Visitors to the Blog site can register and post notices. Online
conversations are possible too especially if you choose a blog site
that is linked up to various instant messenger services.

Talent can outreach their public in a very personal way!

Recently I discovered the blog of Melbourne Songstress Alison Wedding
and Nu Jazz - Funk - Soul Saxophonist Rick Robertson's Eon project
online at MYSPACE.COM.
www.myspace.com/alisonwedding www.myspace.com/eonbeatsproject

Alison has received over 2600 profile views since February and Rick's
site rolled over 300 hits in the past few months.

The feedback from the public about their gigs and recording projects
is very positive.

It is obvious Alison and Rick have made a commitment to nurture
the community that is emerging through blogging!

Impressive presentation!

TO BLOG OR NOT TO BOG? A QUESTION WORTH CONSIDERING!

Five Minutes - Five Questions, Master Musician Mark Isaacs
creator of OZJAZZFORUM responds to the following:

1) When did the OZJAZZFORUM first appear online?

April 2001.

2) Why did you see such a need to launch the Forum?

As an assembly point for discussion in the Australian jazz community
about a wide range of topics.

3) Interesting exchanges of dialogue take place on the ozjazzforum.
Have new jazz projects been inspired through such dialogue? Are
participants making new connections? Any examples to share?

I'm sure, though know of no specific examples. It does happen,
but I'd rather not share specifics and there could be privacy issues.

4) Do you ensure that discussions don't become overheated online?
What are the boundaries?

I have initiated a Code of Conduct. As a a last resort, members
who use abuse on the forum are banned by me. You can read the
Code of Conduct at the forum.

5) Would you like to see the Forum still online in 20 years and
providing additional services? Please elaborate.

Yes, I think it's part of the landscape now. I think I will leave others
to provide other services and make its point solely to be discussion.
We do have a gig calendar though which I will continue.

The OZJAZZFORUM can be located online @ www.ozjazzforum.com
This month Mark Isaacs appointed Writer Miriam Zolin to take on the
role of site Moderator.

Talent Watch...

LADY OF SONG
by Debra Ryan

Michelle Nicolle's move to Melbourne in 1995 was a fortuitous career
decision made by her. The Barossa Valley’s Lady of Song has steadily
built up a reputation as a fine performer on the National Jazz Scene.

In 1998 Newmarket Music released her debut album Misterioso and in
the same year she was awarded Wangaratta International Jazz
Festival’s prestigious National Jazz Award.

Nicolle’s collection of Awards now includes several from the Australian
Entertainment Industry (MO) and she has been a nominee in awards
hosted by the Australian Recording Industry (ARIA) and Melbourne
International Jazz Festival's prestigious award - The Bells.

Courtesy of ABC Label distribution her second album After the Rain
emerged during 2002. The following year New Market Music released,
Keep Your Heart Right and then another ABC deal produced The Crying
Game.

Michelle is currently on a national tour with her latest release that she
recorded last year – What Kind Of Fool.

Deb Ryan of JazzEnews.com contacted Michelle mid-tour for a chat…

DR: Where are you playing at the moment?

MN: We’re in the Barossa Valley in South Australia. We just
did an afternoon gig at the Theatre here. It was just lovely.

DR: Debriefing now… (we both laugh) ?

MN: Yes, we’re just hanging out meeting some people and
having a couple of Barossa Shirazes!

DR: Well deserved! Making a few connections! So it’s a National
Tour, a new album and a new bub I believe?

MN: Yes, she was here today at the gig because she just needed to
be here. We have a little 8-month-old daughter (Ella Lou) and she is
travelling with us all around Australia this trip. It is quite a trip
(giggles) for everybody in lots of ways. I do get some sleep. She
has been very good even though we are sleeping in different beds
every night.

DR: A new experience for you no doubt?

MN: Oh yeah for sure! Absolutely! It’s a whole different thing
organising a baby. It is hard enough organising your self let alone
a baby and a band. We are all having fun!

DR: I’m sure there will be some inspiration coming from this experience
and a few coo coos in the next album (we both giggle). Tell us about
your album ‘What Kind Of Fool’.

MN: We recorded that last year and I specifically remember it because
I was just pregnant and we were working on songs we were playing
on gigs, and one of the songs I wrote especially for recording. It was
really a calm recording process that we went through. I think it a very
honest album, its what we do on gigs. It is as close as possible you are
going to get in a studio that we do on actual gigs. We are quite happy
with this one.

DR: Did you feel the sound was a little bit more grown up? Does that
make sense?

MN: Yeah I do think so…

DR: …being pregnant, new responsibilities…

MN: …possibly yeah and you know every year that clocks by you are a
little bit older and wiser, you know what you like and what you don’t like,
I think definitely that is a part of it.

DR: What sort of energy did you have to put into the arrangements,
cause it was laid back in part and very calming like you said…

MN: The arrangements I partly do them beforehand and partly they
happen by playing them on the gigs. Some of the tunes on this new
CD we hadn’t really gigged very much they were sorta done for the
record. (Laughs) I can’t remember what the question was.

DR: (Laughs) That’s ok, you haven’t much energy now after just
finishing a gig so thanks so much for this interview.

MN: Yeah, touring, we were in Adelaide yesterday, Sydney the day
before, Darwin the day before that you know we are not use to this
rock and roll life style…

DR: …aren’t you now! Hey you deserve it! It is good to get out there
with your music and meet the audience that buy your albums.

MN: Yes it is the best thing you could possibly hope for if you are
playing music for a living that you get to actually go and play it to
real people and different people that is absolutely what we are
aiming for most of the time.

DR: What impressed me about this album Michelle, I love the DVD
package. Live in Korea.

MN: That was a very fortunate thing we were touring the end of 94,
a festival gig and they recorded and put it on Television without us
actually giving permission. When we found out we were all pretty
cool about it, they said we will give you the footage and you use it
anyway you like sorta thing as long as you don’t sell it so we thought
we’d give it away as a free bonus to a CD.

DR: Excellent.

MN: It is quite good quality and it was sorta fun getting it together
actually.

DR: What sort of money would you’ve had to fork out if you had to
organise it your self?

MN: Well we just wouldn’t of.

DR: Really?

MN: No we couldn’t possibly afford to do something like that.

DR: But after you brought this package out has it inspired you
to dabble further in the DVD technology, if possibly there is an
opportunity? (we both giggle)

MN: Not really. No I’m not much into technology, no but like I
said it landed in our laps so we were very lucky.

DR: What other album projects have you got in the wind? Anymore
this year.

MN: It is already drawing to close did you notice? Its August.

DR: Christmas soon, new Baby, first Christmas! I hear where you
are coming from Michelle. Sounds like you are going to wind down
after this tour.

MN: I think we will just start thinking about next year. We’ve got
some trips planned to tour Overseas, think toward those and the
guys are always recording every gig and they are pretty keen to
do some live thing maybe next time. We will just see what happens.
Keep doing it!

DR: Who is on the road with you this time?

MN: The usual band, Tom Lee on bass, he as been with us for a year,
Geoff Hughes on Guitar, he has been with us for a long time and Ronnie
Ferella on drums.

DR: I can hear that you do need to relax (we both giggle) I think it
has been wonderful that you have talked to me just after a gig.

MN: Oh it’s a pleasure!

DR: You enjoy the journey and I hope you get a chance to chill
somewhere down the line. Thank you very much, now go and have
another drink and get set for the next part of your Tour.

MN: Will do! Thank you very much for calling and we look forward
to seeing you...

Interview first heard on Radio 99 - Seven FM, Brisbane - 06/08/06.

Jazz Radio Career Profile:

I Started working with John Morrison on his Jazz @ 5 Show on Fridays,
Co-hosting and taking turns on alternate weeks in March 2005. My
youngest child started school and wanted to do something more than
sit around waiting for gigs, now that I had a little more time on my
hands. I have allways been interested in broadcasting since my youth
when we had a tape recorder and I would pretend to interview people
(my brother and sister) or create radio soap opera shows. Obviously
Jazz was the best way into the industry and having a Jazz show has
broadened my knowledge not only of broadcasting in general, but of
the "record' industry and jazz music of all kinds. Having been
interviewed a few times on radio, I developed a fascination of it
again, and was told by some that I was "good" on radio.

So I let my buddy John Morrison know I was interested in Radio, and
he passed my name on to the Station Manager. John was looking for
a co-host who could work in with his many other jazz commitments,
so I was eased into it gradually. John left the show to me in Nov 2005
and to this day I present the show by myself.

My duties as an anouncer also include queuing up ads, reading the
weather, (getting better at that), reading out traffic reports and doing
live reads. I write my own scripts produce my own show, record my
own interviews in the studio or at home, or go live either on the phone
or in the studio, and of course line up my own music and research it.

I have had Melbourne Award winning Jazz vocalist Michelle Nicolle on
my show, Sydney songstress Virna Sanzone, I interviewed John
Morrison (Jame's brother, and bandleader of Swing City Big Band) in
depth, Gregg Poppleton who is a Sydney 1930's style dance band
leader, Melbourne vocalist Christine Sullivan, and Sydney vocalist
Bonnie J Jensen. I am enjoying interviewing and am presently doing
a short course on interviewing, talk back and current affairs at the
Australian Television and Radio School here in Sydney which is
Australia's premier radio school. It is a 10 week course and absolutely
fascinating! Every night we have a leading professional from the
industry come in and drop pearls into our shell pink ears!!! John Laws
senior script writer for instance! I am hoping I have the courage to
expand my radio career at some stage to perhaps apply for a talk
back position. Will keep you posted.

I find the station very supportive of my jazz career it is in their interest
to have someone who is on the coal-face, so to speak, as an announcer.
I have many contacts and of course hear all the gossip! within the small
tight knit Jazz industry I am a part of.

I love going into the station and playing all my favourite music and
plugging many Aussie artists who often don't get played on any other
station. I try to keep it current, play a little overseas stuff, if it's not
done to death on other shows. I also offer pod-casts of my interviews
on my website at www.leoniesmith.com with permission from the artists
interviewed. I have more to add when I have time to edit.

Jazz Related Interests:

My favourite Artists are often Australian, and it changes sometimes
depending on the style of their latest release. I love vocalist's Michelle
Nicolle, Bonnie J Jensen, Nina Ferro, Ingrid James, Dan Barnett, John
Harkins (singer pianist" Sydney), and instrumentalists Brisbane Guitarist
James Sherlock, Melissa Forbes (brisbane vocalist) Trevor Hart
Brisbane Trumpeter, Hip Mo Toast from Perth, Andrew Pendlebury and
Doug De Vries, George Golla (of course) Bruce Mathiski guitarist, Mark
Locket (Melb drummer), The Catholics, The Shannon Goodrich ensemble
(Melb) John Morrison's swing band. and many many others and that's
only the Aussie Artists!

I have just released my 2nd Album a Live Album in duo with George
Golla. It is Self Produced in every way including the music, artwork,
styling, P.R. Recorded by John Morrison and except running off the
actual c.d.'s. I am doin it all! and soon only available as a digital
download from all the usual download sites.

I plan to keep broadcasting, and singing for as long as my voice
hangs in there. I don't see an age limit on this career, unless of
course I decide to retire to a nice beach house one day with my
jazz lovin hubby.
