JazzEnews.com - The Journey

Throughout 2002 Deb Ryan(Morrice) thought what would it take to
create an Australian Jazz News Service.

To birth this project the ex commercial broadcaster/journalist started
writing short news segments for a number of Brisbane Community
Radio Stations.

As she embraced the E-age (purchased a computer, plugged it
in, read a few instructions)came the sudden realisation that her
new toy was indeed the ideal tool to network news beyond
her City! (And a need to read a few more instructions).

The once fax driven media personality now had the World at her
fingertips!

Wow the internet! An opportunity to publish your passions online!

Before getting too carried away with the project Deb spent hours
researching online for Australian Jazz News.

What a discovery!

Many musicans and venues were already networking in cyber space
and a number of the jazz clubs had really embraced the internet
technology. The Adelaide Jazz Website, authored by Vernice Hunt
was a very resourceful site, writer Miriam Zolin had created the
jazz-planet.com concept and the Australian Jazz Co-ordination
offered news and classy interviews and reviews online.

What happened to The Australian Jazz Co-ordination?

After making several phone calls to various people in the Jazz
Industry and receiving different reasons why the Jazz Co-ordination
no longer existed Deb decided to not get caught up in the politics
of knowing why and concentrate on her own E- Journey!

At first News via email proved to be a cost effective way to deliver content.

The text loaded emails soon held graphics and pics however they
grew to be lengthy so the service needed to be streamlined!

What developed was a need to 'keep it simple for success' !

Deb started receiving positive feedback from members of the
Australian Jazz Community. At one stage swingin' jazz cat
John Morrison replied to one of her email news runs, commended
her initiative and suggested that she start an Ezine.

A great idea she thought! Still Deb was mindful though that She just
wanted to write news and not spend hours creating web pages so a
considerable amount of thought was needed to develop the concept!

In reality what was needed was a cost effective and simple website to
house content.

At around the same time Harold Lak, Webmaster of many web sites
made contact with Deb and encouraged her to invest in a website.

Destiny! Deb didn't have a clue how to build a website!

Harold appeared on the scene at the right time it seemed! He had the
knowledge and experience to guide Debra to invest wisely!

The delightful dutch man loved jazz too and supported Deb's dream to
create a news service!

After many colourful conversations with Harold a domain name was
needed for the service then he could commence building a site.

A Name! What name?

The Jazz emails were labelled Jazz Connections but after Deb learned
that this was an actual business name of a fellow supporter, Bob Mair
of the Caxton Street Jazz Band(who incidently didn't mind her using
the name) arose the need to establish a unique identity for potential
growth.

Jazz Connections
Jazz-e-News

The word Jazz-e-News had already appeared on several emails so the word Jazz Connections was dropped and Jazz e-News stayed!

The news service needed a domain name the following 2 names were
to be the likely names:

*jazz-e-news.com
*jazz-enews.com

Harold explained why it would be best to drop the hypens and what
emerged was jazzenews.com . The domain name was available
and first registered online at reginet.com.

Domain Name.......... jazzenews.com
Creation Date........ 2002-11-12
Registration Date.... 2002-11-12

Although a business name was then registered on the 13/11/2002
Debra decided it be best to trademark the name to give herself
options to develop the service.

The Trademark process begins...

Checked against ASIC's database at 15:23:57 on 12/11/2002

Name Checked : JAZZENEWS

As at the time of this extract, the name checked is not considered to be
identical to any name protected by the provisions of s147(1)(a) or (b)
of the Corporations Act 2001 registered on the ASIC database.

The submission of the trademark was made online and by the 21/03/03
the application was cleared by IP Australia - www.ipaustralia.gov.au .

Before the trademark could be registered it had to be advertised in the
IP's official journal from 03/04/2003. This advertisement started a three
month opposition period. The trademark was not opposed!

Trade Mark Details...

Type:..... Combined Word and Device Mark
Word(s):..JAZZENEWS.COM "ENJOY LIFE...DISCOVER JAZZ!"

Goods And Services: Class 41

Now Deb felt like a 'new born baby' with big ears to grow into!

Between 2003 and 2004 the website developed in stages then finally
a bulletin board appeared! A bulletin board that could be accessed and
updated quickly. There was no need to build webpages every day and
the site had a news room vibe about it.

The e-News runs could now be condensed within the emails sent out
and the new format contained links back to the bulletin board for
contacts to view. Streamlined!

An influx of new Australian Jazz websites appeared online!

Alan Corbet, Jazz Coordinator of Western Australia was not only
developing his own organisation's website he organised to create
and launch Jazz Australia Jazz.org.au. on behalf of several jazz bodies.

For some time this had been a vision shared by many others, in
particular South Australian Jazz Co-ordinator Margaret Reines.

Martin Jackson of Melbourne Jazz Co-op invested energy into
organising a website.

Veronica Fury commenced Brisbanejazz.com. This site provided an
opportunity for Queensland talent to list their gigs. Veronica then took
on the role of Jazz Development Officer of Jazz Queensland and helped
to establish a website for this organisation. She was greatly assisted by
Digital Media Whiz/Musician Jim Budd. Jimmy eventually was given
the opportunity to maintain Brisbanejazz.com and be appointed Jazz
Queensland's Development Officer.

The Australian jazz industry was really cyber connected!

Early 2005 the JazzEnews.com site disappeared! How? Why? Her
Webmaster had lost over 20 others sites he was managing as well.
The company he paid to provide server space online had wiped all
the sites.

Harold spent months re-establishing his clients online however Deb
chose to let the service go and eventually come back online with a
similiar project housing many other genres. She informed contacts
and subscribers that possibly the JazzEnews.com service would
emerge at a later date.

A new online project was not established and after many months of
contemplating the viability of re-launching the JazzEnew.com service
a decision was made to re-build again.

Debra starting contacting past contacts from mid 2005. The Bulletin Board contains the following:

Jazz eNews Room - Australia
Jazz Links - Australia
Blues Links - Australia
Other Music Links - Australia
Interviews: Jazz, 2002 - 2006
Interviews: Jazz, 1998 - 2001
Reviews
Gift Gallery
Various Archives/Articles etc
Information

2007> This Service is now a networking tool streamlined to house links, incoming news and interviews.
